Harlem, birth of a ghetto
At the morning, we went to Harlem. We took the subway and the journey wasn’t long.
In the 20th century, because of the problems to build the subway in New York, the prices decreased and the neighborhood attracted Jewish Immigrants. A little after, the african-amercian population also arrived in Harlem. Indeed, the racism and the discrimination was very present in the Southern of United States. The situation was very bad for black people : they suffered many aggretions, humiliations, and so on…
So for many years, Harlem was th African American Quarter of New York. He represented th fight of black people for freedom and equality.
In the 1990s, in order to make the neighborhood more frequentable, many renovations have been implemented, thanks to private and public funds. Today, Harlem has another reputation in New York, more enjoyable thanks to the development of shops and entertainment. The person are so kind and respectful.

Au XXe siècle, en raison des difficultés rencontrées pour construire le métro à New York, les prix ont baissé et le quartier a attiré des immigrants juifs. Peu après, la population afro-américaine est également arrivée à Harlem. En effet, le racisme et la discrimination étaient très présents dans le Sud des États-Unis. La situation était très difficile pour les Noirs : ils subissaient de nombreuses agressions, humiliations, etc.
Ainsi, pendant de nombreuses années, Harlem a été le quartier afro-américain de New York. Il a symbolisé la lutte des Noirs pour la liberté et l’égalité.
Dans les années 1990, afin de rendre le quartier plus attractif, de nombreuses rénovations ont été entreprises grâce à des fonds publics et privés. Aujourd’hui, Harlem jouit d’une autre réputation à New York, plus agréable grâce au développement des commerces et des lieux de divertissement. Les gens y sont très aimables et respectueux.
Gospel Choir and the Church
After we walked around the streets of Harlem, we had the opportunately to see a Gospel celebration.
The church impressed me because it is so big ! The stained glass windows are so amazing and full of colours. The architecture of the church was amazing !
The gospel choir was incredible, they created a great atmosphere thoughout the entire building. We attended a mass but it was so funny and greatest than the french masses.

L’église m’a impressionnée par sa taille ! Les vitraux sont magnifiques et très colorés. L’architecture de l’église était remarquable !
La chorale gospel était incroyable ; elle a créé une ambiance formidable dans tout le bâtiment. Nous avons assisté à une messe, c’était très drôle et bien plus divertissant que les messes en français.
